What is Melatonin?
Melatonin is a hormone that is naturally produced by a small gland in our brain called the pineal gland. Our bodies have internal clocks that organize our natural sleeping and waking cycles, and melatonin basically helps us in controlling these cycles.
Our bodies also control the amount of the melatonin produced. Generally, our melatonin levels start rising in the evening and reach their highest levels during the night. These levels then drop in the early hours of the morning.
Not only does our lifestyle affect our melatonin production, but the amount of natural light that we absorb into our bodies, affects it too. During winter months, when the days are generally shorter, our bodies may start producing melatonin, earlier or later than usual. If this change is significant, it can lead to the Seasonal Affective Disorder or winter depression.
The natural melatonin levels in our bodies slowly drop with age too. Some people see a reduction of the production of melatonin as they grow older and some stop making it at all. Even though our bodies make melatonin there are small amounts found in food as well.
Due to different age related and season related factors sometimes the melatonin production in the body is negatively affected and, as a result, we start finding it difficult to fall asleep. This is when melatonin supplements come to the rescue. People consume melatonin in different forms to fix their sleeping cycles and to induce a relaxing and peaceful sleep.
Liquid Melatonin vs. Pills
While Melatonin is available in many different forms in the market, many people prefer the pure liquid form over pills. This is not only because people generally do not have a liking for pills and capsules, but also because pills and capsules are not as effective as the pure liquid form.
Liquid melatonin acts a lot faster than pills because it is directly absorbed by the mucosa of the mouth and reaches the brain much faster. Usually, it only takes three to ten minutes for the liquid melatonin to take hold.
Meanwhile, other forms of melatonin have to go through the digestion process to finally enter the bloodstream and reach the brain. This process normally takes around twenty to thirty minutes.
We live in a world where our lives are packed with unlimited tasks and we are always looking for immediate results. Liquid melatonin helps us do that. IMSOALPHA Power Down is a supplement which is pure liquid melatonin.
What Dose of Melatonin Should I Take?
The association between the dose and the supposed effect does not prove to be present in the case of melatonin. Consequently, it is tricky to decide the most favorable dose for an individual but research suggests that even low doses of melatonin can be very effective. So even though the advertised strength of melatonin doses ranges from 1 mg to 10 mg, it is advised that 3 mg dose is more than enough for an individual.
With these limitations, one should also know that when it comes to melatonin doses, the timing matters a lot as well, and also high blood pressure levels can be problematic. So taking too much of melatonin can end up flooding your system, which can also result in counteracting the benefits. IMSOALPHA Power Down is liquid melatonin which is available in natural flavors for easy consumption.
Why do I need a good night’s sleep?
It is scientifically proven that sleep deprivation can cause several mechanisms to function improperly. Sleep largely affects numerous hormones and metabolic procedures. Studies have proven that only a week of sleep deprivation can result in noteworthy changes in glucose tolerance. When our bodies are sleep deprived, they release more cortisol, which we call the stress hormone. It has been shown that not having adequate sleep can slow the body’s natural production of growth hormone.
It is also said that sleep deprivation causes visible weight gain. According to various studies, the risk of obesity increases when one does not sleep for more than two to four hours at night. People with the lowest BMI are usually the ones who get plenty of sleep.
Glucose tolerance impairment is a common consequence of sleep deprivation, which generally makes one feel hungrier and more tired than usual. This automatically results in a noticeable calorie surplus.
3. Immune system
Our immune systems are quite complex. They are made up several different kinds of cells and proteins that help us fight all sorts of diseases. Many studies suggest that our T-cells descend and inflammatory cytokines ascend when we are sleep deprived. In simple words, sleep deprivation holds our immune system back from functioning properly.
4. Memory and Creativity
Sleep deprivation also has an influence on our cognitive skills. Studies have shown that chronic and acute sleep deprivation; disturb learning and thinking processes. Concentration, attentiveness, response time, memory, analysis skills, and imaginative thinking; all experience a downfall; both chronically and acutely, when we are sleep deprived.
5. Muscle Growth
All weightlifters are aware of the fact that when they are lifting weights, they are actually tearing their muscles up in a good way. The fact that they should also be aware of, is that their bodies will not start repairing if they are not resting properly. With insufficient sleep, they are not giving their muscles enough time to repair and recover. Without sleep, their bodies will not recover and they will end up going to the next workout and lifting session, at a disadvantage.
